The Spanish Club, sponsored by Mrs. Oxendine, has put together a showcase spotlighting the students’ talents. Introductions and thanks to Principal Carmichael for allowing us to put together our 2nd program, Mrs. Roberts and Madeline Solter for helping on the tech booth, Mrs. Davis for helping coordinate the show, Mrs. Jordan for helping display the art, Mrs. Eleanor Powers and Mr. Legette for letting us use the EPAC, and Avery Kirby and Mady Arnette for helping backstage. Kaylani Spivey sang our National Anthem beautifully. Jaelynn Truman was our wonderful MC for the program.
Mrs. Oxendine paid tribute to Selena Quintanilla with a silk dance to her hit song “Como la Flor.” Janet Fernandez created a presentation on Famous Hispanics and Latinos who have greatly impacted our history. Rhae Cox choreographed and performed an explosive Color Guard solo routine to Pierce the Veil’s hit song “Bulls in the Bronx.” The Spanish Club accompanied Mrs. Oxendine and Mrs. Davis to sing “Stand by Me” by Ben E. King in both English and Spanish. Art was submitted and shown next. Janet Fernandez created a sugar skull inspired by the celebration of Día de los Muertos in Mexico. Emily Baxley created yarn art inspired by the Huichol people of western Mexico. Emily Baxley is also credited with designing the Spanish Club T-shirts this year. Jha’Kayla Jones painted “El Romance de Manolo y Maria,” which translates to “The Romance of Manolo and Maria,” inspired by the movie “The Book of Life.” Aiyana and Hayleigh created a delicious presentation on food from the 21 Spanish-speaking countries/Islands.
The Spanish Club closed the show for the first time with a band called “Seis de Sietes,”which translates to “Six of Sevens.” Seis de Sietes is comprised of Abigail Jones as vocals, Adrian Valencia on the guitar, Janet Fernandez on the Keyboard, Clay Lee on the Maracas, Brianna Hayes on the Guiro, Bella Herring on the Trumpet, and Kaylani Spivey on the Tambourine. They performed the hit song “Nunca es Suficiente” by Los Angeles Azules, which translates to “The Blue Angels.” Mrs. Oxendine thanked the Spanish Club for their courage to showcase their talents, fusing them with Hispanic/Latino influences. Mrs. Oxendine looks forward to working with students on the next Hispanic Heritage Program.
