District Wellness Policy

The wellness policy requirement was established by the Child Nutrition and Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) Re-authorization Act of 2004 and further strengthened by the Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act of 2010 (HHFKA). It requires each local educational agency (LEA) participating in the National School Lunch Program and/or School Breakfast Program to develop a wellness policy. The final rule expands the requirements to strengthen policies and increase transparency. The responsibility for developing, implementing, and evaluating a wellness policy is placed at the local level, so the unique needs of each school under the LEA’s jurisdiction can be addressed. If you would like to serve on the district wellness committee, please contact Jenna Deaver, RDN, LRD: (843) 752-7101 ext. 1018 or email: jenna.deaver@lattavikings.com.

Sharing Cart

Share carts are an excellent way for child nutrition programs to reduce food waste and help hungry kids get extra food. For those times when students’ eyes are bigger than their stomachs, they can place select foods they don’t want on the share cart for other students to eat. Share carts are permitted by the USDA, according to specific guidelines. Prepackaged, shelf-stable items, such as crackers and granola bars, or whole fruits that must be peeled before eating, like oranges and bananas, are excellent to place on a share cart.
