Students planting the raised beds at Latta Middle School

Latta Middle School students began cleaning and planting new items for the upcoming season.  Students first cleaned the beds by weeding, adding more soil, and turning over the old soil.  Mrs. Angela Barrentine and Ms. Bridget Locklear assisted the class and gave instructions and demonstrated what needed to be done.  The plants and seeds were provided by Clemson Extension.

The first raised bed was planted with broccoli plants.  Seedlings of carrots and beets were sown into the other two beds.  Students had a great time planting and participating in the new garden and are looking forward to watching the harvest grow.  When it is time to harvest, the class will harvest and get to taste the bounty they nurtured and grew.

School gardens are living laboratories that create teaching opportunities to assist with nutrition and agriculture education. This allows students the experience and the know how to survive other than just going to the grocery store for items.

Stay tuned for more updates as the garden grows!
