Latta Middle School Student Council traveled to Chapin High School in Chapin, South Carolina this weekend to attend the South Carolina Association of Student Council State Convention. Pictures are from various events throughout the weekend.

The Latta Middle School Academic Challenge Team went up against a few LMS staff members in a full Academic Challenge match last night! The staff members won 45-23! Go Vikings!

Mrs. Roberts' and Mrs. Harrison's 6th grade homerooms recently became published authors. A book reveal took place in order to share their books with family and friends. The students worked extremely hard, and their hard work definitely paid off. Congratulations!

The students in Mrs. Marsh’s 7th grade Science classes just finished working on their Ecosystems Diorama and Writing Projects. They had to depict an ecosystem of their choice in a diorama that included producers, consumers, decomposers, and symbiotic relationships. It could be a terrestrial or an aquatic ecosystem. They also had to research each of these organisms within their ecosystem and write about them in an essay.  The top ten winners are shown in the photos.

The National Junior Honor Society sponsored a Souper Bowl Canned Food Drive from January 28th through February 7th.  Students brought in canned food to cheer on their favorite team in the Super Bowl and support the needs of our local community.  Our school's canned food drive was a huge success! We are thrilled to announce that we collected 1,066 cans. A special shoutout to Ms. Upton's homeroom for collecting the most cans, 424. The winning team for the event was the Eagles with 657 cans. We are very proud of the kindness and community spirit that was shown by our students. Together, we showed the power of giving back and helping others.

Mrs. Roberts' 6th grade ELA classes recently studied the different types of rhetorical appeal (logos, ethos, and pathos). One class created billboards, while the other class created pet rocks. Both classes had to use rhetorical appeal to sell their product or convince an audience that their pet rock should be the class mascot. A special thanks to Mrs. Williamson's 8th grade Honors ELA class for judging the competition.

Congratulations to the LMS Academic Challenge Team for qualifying for the championship match and finishing in 2nd place in the region Academic Challenge Team tournament. We are very impressed with the knowledge of this team. Mr. Jordan Williams is the advisor and has done an amazing job leading this group of students.

Students in Mrs. Marsh's 7th grade Science class have been enjoying their study of ecosystems. They recently played a game called "Oh Deer!" to discover how limiting factors such as food, water, and shelter contribute to fluctuating wildlife populations. They learned that overpopulation of a species in an ecosystem can be a huge problem. They also found out more about the predator/prey relationship, competitive relationships, and cooperative relationships. Students absolutely LOVED this interactive and highly competitive game that explored the so-called "balance of nature" and emphasized how ecosystems are constantly changing.

We are so very proud of Caylee and how well she represented Latta Middle School at the regional spelling bee this week! Caylee made it to the fourth round and was one of the top 12 students. Please help me congratulate Caylee on a job well done!

A representative from Josten's met with our 7th grade students today to provide information for ordering a middle school spirit ring. Students viewed a presentation and received a packet of information to take home and share with parents. If you are interested in ordering, you may order online at RhodesGraduation.com/middleschool/. Congratulations to our Academic Challenge team for their win against Dillon Middle School this afternoon. The final score of the match was 32-24. Way to go Vikings!

Latta Schools will operate on a two hour delay on Friday, January 24. Buses will pick up two hours later than normal time and schools will take in two hours later than normal schedule. Breakfast and lunch will be served. Please remind your child to bring in their eLearning work from Wednesday.

Due to freezing temperatures and expected dangerous road conditions, Latta Schools will be closed tomorrow (1/23). The state allows 5 eLearning days. We used our 5th day today. Therefore, tomorrow will be a closure. We will make up this day on Friday, February 7 which is a scheduled teacher workday. All teachers and students should report on February 7.

This year’s yearbook theme is “Diary of a LMS Student!” Yearbooks are still on sale. Standard yearbooks are $40.00 and personalized yearbooks start at $49.00.
